Conan Exiles Troubleshooting

Having issues with your Conan Exiles server? This guide covers common problems and their solutions.

Server Won’t Start

Check the Console

First, check the console output for error messages:
  1. Go to your server in the Game Panel
  2. Click the Console tab
  3. Look for red error messages

Common Startup Issues

Cause: Server doesn’t have enough RAM for your configuration.Solution:
  • Reduce max player count
  • Remove some mods
  • Upgrade to a higher RAM plan
Cause: Another process is using the server port.Solution:
  1. Stop all servers on your account
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Start your Conan server
  4. If it persists, contact support
Cause: Server is still initializing or frozen.Solution:
  1. Wait 5-10 minutes (first startup can be slow)
  2. If still stuck, click Kill then Start
  3. Check console for errors

Connection Issues

Players Can’t Find Server

Check Server is Running

Verify the server shows as “Online” in the Game Panel

Make sure your server name is set in the Startup tab

Check Region Setting

Ensure the region is set correctly in ServerSettings.ini

Wait for Listing

New servers can take 5-10 minutes to appear in the browser

Players Can’t Connect

Causes:
  • Server is still starting up
  • Server crashed
  • Network issues
Solution:
  1. Check if server is online in Game Panel
  2. Try restarting the server
  3. Have players try Direct Connect instead of browser
Cause: Client and server are on different game versions.Solution:
  1. Have players update their game on Steam
  2. Server updates automatically - just restart it
Cause: Player doesn’t have required mods or has wrong versions.Solution:
  1. Share your mod list with players
  2. Have them subscribe to all required mods
  3. Players should verify game files on Steam
Cause: Player entered wrong password.Solution:
  1. Verify the server password in Startup tab
  2. Share correct password with players
  3. If changed recently, restart the server

Direct Connect Not Working

  1. Verify you’re using the correct IP and port
  2. Check the Network tab for your server’s IP
  3. Default port is 7777
  4. Format: IP:7777 (e.g., 123.45.67.89:7777)

Performance Issues

Server Lag

Solution:
  • Reduce max players
  • Upgrade to a higher RAM plan
  • Reduce building/thrall limits
Solution:
  • Remove unnecessary mods
  • Check for mod updates (performance improvements)
  • Upgrade server resources
Solution:
  • Enable decay system
  • Set building piece limits
  • Clean up abandoned bases

Server Crashes

Cause: Often a scheduled task or mod issue.Solution:
  1. Check if crash aligns with any scheduled events
  2. Review recent mod additions
  3. Check console logs for patterns
Cause: Memory issues, mod conflicts, or corruption.Solution:
  1. Restart server to clear memory
  2. Update all mods
  3. Verify game files
  4. Contact support if persists
Cause: Corrupted player data or mod issue.Solution:
  1. Try having player verify game files
  2. Remove character and recreate (last resort)
  3. Check for mod updates

Configuration Issues

Settings Not Saving

Always stop the server before editing configuration files!
Cause: Server overwrites changes on shutdown. Solution:
  1. Stop the server completely
  2. Make your changes
  3. Save the file
  4. Start the server

Settings Not Applying

Causes:
  • Syntax error in config file
  • Wrong file location
  • Server needs restart
Solution:
  1. Double-check file is in correct location:
    ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/
    
  2. Verify syntax (no typos, correct formatting)
  3. Restart the server after changes

Admin Password Not Working

  1. Verify password in ServerSettings.ini or Startup tab
  2. Restart the server after changing password
  3. In-game: Escape → Settings → Server Settings → Enter password → Make Me Admin

World and Save Issues

World Reset/Corruption

Always maintain regular backups to prevent data loss!
If your world was reset:
  1. Check the Backups tab for recent backups
  2. Restore from the most recent backup
  3. If no backups, the world may be unrecoverable

Restoring a Backup

  1. Go to Backups in the Game Panel
  2. Find the backup you want to restore
  3. Click Restore
  4. Wait for restoration to complete
  5. Start your server

Backup Best Practices

  • Enable automatic backups in the Schedules tab
  • Download backups periodically for off-site storage
  • Backup before making major changes or adding mods

Mod-Specific Issues

Mods Not Loading

  1. Verify mod IDs are correct
  2. Check mods still exist on Steam Workshop
  3. Restart server to trigger download
  4. Delete mod .pak files and let server re-download

Mod Conflicts

Symptoms:
  • Server crashes on startup
  • Strange in-game behavior
  • Missing items or features
Solution:
  1. Remove recently added mods
  2. Test mods one at a time
  3. Check mod descriptions for known conflicts
  4. Adjust load order if needed
