Troubleshooting VEIN

Solutions to common VEIN dedicated server issues.

Server Won’t Start

Missing or Invalid Steam Token

Most common issue! Your server requires a valid Steam Game Server Login Token.
Symptoms:
  • Server crashes immediately on startup
  • Console shows authentication errors
  • Server starts but doesn’t appear in browser
Solution:
  1. Go to Steam Game Server Account Management
  2. Generate a new token with App ID 1857950
  3. Go to Startup in the Game Panel
  4. Enter the new token
  5. Restart your server

Wrong App ID

If you used the wrong App ID when generating your token, the server will fail to start. Solution:
  • Delete the old token from Steam
  • Create a new token with App ID 1857950 (not the demo ID)
  • Update the token in your server’s Startup settings

Insufficient Resources

Symptoms:
  • Server crashes during startup
  • “Out of memory” errors
  • Extremely slow startup
Solution:
  • VEIN requires significant RAM - ensure you have at least 8GB allocated
  • Check your plan and upgrade if necessary
  • Reduce max players setting

Server Not Appearing in Browser

Steam Token Issues

If your server runs but doesn’t appear in the browser:
  1. Verify your Steam token is valid and for App ID 1857950
  2. Check that the token hasn’t been revoked
  3. Wait 5-10 minutes for Steam to update server listings

Firewall/Port Issues

Ensure ports are correctly allocated:
PortPurpose
27015Game Server
27016Query Port
Both ports need to be accessible. Check the Network tab in your Game Panel.

Use Direct Connect

While troubleshooting browser issues, use Direct Connect:
  1. Get your server IP from the Game Panel Network tab
  2. In VEIN, select MultiplayerDirect Connect
  3. Enter IP:Port

Players Can’t Connect

Server is Full

Check if max players has been reached. Increase the limit or wait for a slot.

Password Protected

If your server has a password:
  • Ensure players are entering the correct password
  • Try removing the password temporarily to test

Version Mismatch

VEIN updates frequently during Early Access:
  1. Ensure your server is updated to the latest version
  2. Players must have the same game version
  3. Reinstall server if needed (backup first!)

Connection Timeout

Symptoms:
  • “Connection timed out” errors
  • Players get stuck on loading screen
Solutions:
  1. Check server is actually running in Console
  2. Verify correct IP and port
  3. Try restarting the server
  4. Check if server is overloaded (reduce max players)

Performance Issues

Server Lag

Causes:
  • Too many players for allocated RAM
  • Long uptime without restart
  • World save corruption
Solutions:
  1. Reduce max players
  2. Schedule regular restarts (every 12-24 hours)
  3. Increase RAM allocation
  4. Clear old logs and temporary files

High Memory Usage

VEIN can be memory intensive, especially with many players and built structures. Solutions:
  • Upgrade to a higher RAM plan
  • Reduce max players
  • Reset the world if bases have grown very large

Desync Issues

Symptoms:
  • Players see different things
  • Items disappearing
  • Rubberbanding
Solutions:
  1. Restart the server
  2. Check server isn’t overloaded
  3. Verify all players have stable connections

World/Save Issues

World Won’t Load

Solutions:
  1. Check for corrupted save files
  2. Restore from a backup
  3. Try starting with a fresh world

Lost Progress

If progress is lost:
  1. Check if the correct world save is selected
  2. Look for backup saves in the File Manager
  3. Restore from automatic backups in the Backups tab

Creating a Fresh World

If you need to start over:
  1. Stop the server
  2. Backup existing world (just in case)
  3. Delete the world save folder
  4. Start the server - a new world will generate
